HOW DO I JOIN 4-H?
Monterey County 4-H Youth Development Program is primarily unit-based. There are 19 units, also known as clubs, located in Monterey County. These units are chartered under the auspices of the University of California. In order to find a club which best suits the needs of your family, please follow these steps.
Click on Monterey County and locate a 4-H club in your area. Click on the name of a club in your area and find out what projects that club offers and when their club meetings are scheduled. (These meetings are subject to change, and it is recommended to contact them prior to attending any meeting to verify date, location and time). Once you have reviewed the clubs in your area, call the 4-H Office at 831-759-7360 and tell them which club you are interested in joining and would like the name and phone number of the Community Club Leader (CCL) for that particular club or club(s).
Contact the CCL and verify the location, date, an time of their next meeting. Let them know you would like to attend on of their meetings to find out more about the program and enroll.
The Community Club Meetings are held once a month with approximately 10 meetings a year. Therefore, while the meeting may seem overwhelmng remember you will not necessarily participate in every project, fundraiser, or community/citizenship project mentioned. Pay attention to what interests you and your child. Ask for a copy of any newsletter or flyer they may have distributed. Ask for a copy of their club's Constitution and Bylaws, and any project rules they may have. This will inform you of any special provisions they may have - attendance, community pride/citizenship participation requirements, fundraisers, etc. Make sure you and your child can meet these requirements. Once you have found the unit that best suits your family's needs, it is time to enroll in the program. (Please see Enrollment Forms)
If you plan on becoming a Volunteer Leader, this means completing the Volunteer Leader Packet and receiving fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice. You will need to call or stop by the 4-H Office and obtain a Livescan Fingerprint Form, take it to the MontereyCounty Sheriff's Department with 2 forms of identification. Please check with your local Sheriff's/Police Department to determine cost of fingerprinting. Return a copy of this completed form to the 4-H Office. This process can take one day or four weeks. The 4-H Office will notify you when they receive notice.
